I Will Support Anybody, But Not Jonathan - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again escalated his rejection of President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2nd term bid by declaring his current mindset to be “Anything But Jonathan” (ABJ).

He expressed his feelings to several of his aides after his widely publicized meeting with Jonathan.

Jonathan’s closed-door meeting with Obasanjo clearly failed to soften the former leader’s hostility towards his floundering re-election bid as Obasanjo bluntly told him that having referred to elders as a “touts”, it was hypocritical for Jonathan to turn around to describe him (Obasanjo) as the best president Nigeria ever had.

If Jonathan believes Obasanjo is Nigeria's best president, why does he allow his boy to insult him?

To make matters worse, a few hours after meeting with Jonathan, Obasanjo met with leaders of the APC and their presidential candidate, Muhammad Buhari, where he affirmed he will support the best candidate for the office of President in 2015, regardless of party affiliation.

It would be recalled that on Sunday, while receiving members of the Northern Elders Council in Abuja, an angry Jonathan had in a barely-veiled description of Obasanjo, dismissed some statesmen.

"Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not, they are just ordinary politicians,” Jonathan told his guests. “To be a statesman is not because you have occupied a big office before, but the question is what are you bringing to bear? Are you building this country or are you a part of people who tell lies to destroy the country?”

Upon arriving at the meeting with Obasanjo today, Jonathan tried to turn on the charm, lavishing praise on Obasanjo as he blamed the escalation of attacks on him as the work of his (Jonathan) aides.

According to SR, Obasanjo apparently did not buy any of the goods Jonathan was hawking. Shortly after the encounter, he told his aides he would not change his position on Jonathan’s presidential bid.

Obasanjo’s subsequent and open display of affection towards the APC leadership is reportedly sending shock waves up and down Jonathan’s camp, where it is regarded as confirmation that the reconciliation efforts with Obasanjo have collapsed, leaving him in grave political danger with the election just one month away.

Jonathan did not say how that will happen, after mainly worsening to provide as many jobs in the last six years as president.

As well corruption and insecurity, the Jonathan’s government is obstinately criticized over the huge unemployed population in Nigeria.

The presidency has always pointed to its Small and Medium Scale support agenda, Youwin, which gives grants to only 1,200 people annually.

The government says the programme has involved hundreds of thousands, a figure that has been asked.

According to Premium Times, the government has also failed to defend its statement that it produced 1.6 million jobs in 2013.

Jonathan's Impeachment: 63 Senators Are in Support

goodluck-jonathan

Yesterday, November 27, 63 senators have expressed support to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan.
Punch learnt from its source In Abuja that out of 109 members in the Senate, 63 signed up the plan, with 8 members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) among them.

A senator acting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) criticized Jonathan’s performance saying they were prepared for the difficulties associated with the potential impeachment.
“We know and we are prepared to show the President that we have responsibility to the people and the nation in general. We are prepared to lay the impeachment notice anytime from next week. Meetings are already being held.”
APC Senator Ibrahim Musa representing Niger North confirmed the development with the intention by some Senate members to initiate impeachment but said he was not aware of the details.

“I think there is something like that but I don’t have the details, it is still coming as a rumour.”
However according to the anonymous senator, the impeachment letter has not been introduced yet because some signees, the PDP members, asked for the action delay.
“The truth of the matter is that the impeachment notice would have been laid if not for our colleagues in the PDP who pleaded with us to delay the process pending when the senate leadership would come up with the result of its efforts at securing automatic tickets for them.
“In any case the process had started but if we submit the letter now, the signatures of the PDP senators will be there and the party might want to use that as an excuse to deny them their automatic tickets.”
It would be recalled that talks about Jonathan’s impeachment have been actively circulating in the media this week, which comes just two months ahead of the presidential elections.

Some Senate members were said to be compiling the list of offences by the country leader.

At the same time some House of Reps members disclosed that they worked in cooperation with the upper chamber to initiate the motion.

However the official documents and announcements are yet to be provided on the issue.

OBASANJO VS. JONATHAN: Former President Throws Another Punch [MUST READ]

President Goodluck Jonathan and Former President Olusegun Obasanjo during the 2011 presidential elections campaign

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised President Goodluck Jonathan again, saying Nigerian democracy is at risk due to the president’s actions, Premium Times reports.Obasanjo was speaking at a book launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Justice Mustapha Akanbi‎, in Abuja.

Obasanjo, who was the Chairman of the occasion, advised President Jonathan to stop encouraging “verbal violence which may not physically hurt but has ways of degenerating into physical violence.”

He cautioned the present administration not to destroy opposition of all sort‎s because doing so, means destroying democracy.

“Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated,” the former president said.

“As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up.”

Speaking on the insecurity in the North East, Obasanjo said Boko Haram is not out to “frustrate anyone’s political efforts.” He opined that President Jonathan did not fully understand the issues involved.

Speaking on the issue of corruption, Obasanjo said:“When the head is rotten, the whole body is useless.”

He also spoke on the economy saying, the economy “is not truly what the economy is”.

“The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse,” he concluded.

It will be recalled that Obasanjo berated the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration recently, which attracted a strong response from Aso Rock.

      JONATHAN IMPEACHMENT: Reps Fix Date

      President Goodluck Jonathan

Honorable members at the House of Representatives have fixed next Wednesday, 3rd of November to start the impeachment proceedings against President Goodluck Jonathan. It was gathered by Vanguard on Tuesday that the members of the lower chamber are on the same page with their Senate counterparts in their bid to impeach Jonathan, and that the process will begin immediately the NASS reconvenes next Wednesday.

It was gathered that the assemblymen coordinating the impeachment process have identified over 50 constitutional violations against the President, which would form part of the impeachment notice.

A source within the House of Representatives, who made this known, said both chambers have resolved to work together for the common good of the country by impeaching President Jonathan for“incompetence, corruption and unprecedented impunity.”

The source further explained that the impeachment plot against Jonathan was not a partisan affair, noting that lawmakers from all the political parties have identified with the cause and will not give up until the President is sent packing.

“I’m sure you read the reports today that senators are going to move against Jonathan. Now you can confirm that the impeachment thing is not about APC. It is a non-partisan cause. We have all resolved that the man (President Jonathan) must go. Never in the history of Nigeria has a leader displayed such crass incompetence as we have seen in President Jonathan. It is glaring and you can feel it. Mr. President, with due respect, has shown that he is not capable of running this country. That is the basic truth,” he said.

The high ranking lawmaker reiterated that over 50 impeachable offences that have been identified against Jonathan, and assured that the House would work closely with the Senate to make sure that President Jonathan is removed from office.

It would be recalled that on Monday, November 24, some Senators on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reportedly started move to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan over what they termed the high level of impunity and corruption allegedly being condoned by the Jonathan-led administration.

Meanwhile, the plot to impeach the President spread to the Senate, with a growing number of Senators said to be enthusiastic to team up with the Reps to get the President removed after 130 Reps signed to support the plot to oust Jonathan on Thursday, November 20, 2014.

I’M YET TO SEE THE PARTY THAT CAN BEAT PDP – GOODLUCK JONATHAN BOASTS

President Jonathan has revealed the secret of his success in life which is not forcing things to happen. He says he never gets the things he wants when he tries to force things to happen.Speaking while hosting members of the Presidential Declaration Committee on Wednesday, he begged politicians not to make politics a do or die affair saying:

“In my own life, the things I look for I hardly get. It’s what I don’t even think about that I get sometimes. I believe most of you will smile. But collectively, first and foremost, let us unite the party and work together for our collective victory. Let me use this unique opportunity to plead with all of us who are aspiring for electoral offices that the world does not begin and end with the office you are looking for.

“Sometimes, you would be looking for an office; you may not be able to get it for one reason or the other. Let us say somebody blocked you, so be it, let somebody block you.

“But if God wants something better for you, even after that blocking, you will get something else.

“I plead with all of us that we should not play the do-or-die, except I get it, let the party sink. We are taking inventory of all what is happening in all the states and I promise that we will try and use as many people as possible.

“There are challenges in some states. People may deliberately block you. You may even be the best candidate in that particular constituency, but let us move ahead.”

Speaking further, he said “I’m yet to see those who can beat the PDP. They will continue to make the noise but they cannot beat us, because the gap between PDP and others is very wide.

“The way we do things and the way they do things are very different; the way we talk and the way they talk are very different; the way we reason and the way they reason are very different.

“Our commitment to transform this country and their thinking about Nigeria are very different. And I promise you my party men and women and indeed all Nigerians that with your support, collectively we must move this country to where we want it to be.

“Every day, every week and every month, we must add something; we must change and continue to change.”

          Plot To Impeach Jonathan Deepens

Reports coming from Abuja indicates that the House of Representatives plot to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan has deepened.

It was gathered by the Nation that the plot has now spread to the Senate, and that growing number of Senators are said to be enthusiastic to team up with the Reps to get the President removed.

It was reported that 130 Reps signed to support the plot to oust Jonathan on Thursday, but a source revealed that as at Friday, the number had drastically increased to 148.

The plot to impeach the President started as a reaction to the alleged growing impunity by the Federal Government with the recent incident that took place at the nation’s National Assembly, where lawmakers were tear gassed by the police who barred the Speaker Aminu Tambuwal from entering the chambers.

A source within the Senate on Friday disclosed that some senators were inclined to get President Jonathan impeached. He said the ring leader of the plot in the senate is from the Northeast where the President proposes to extend the emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.

Another source said the ring leaders have been meeting to plan how to convince and win other senators to buy into and support the pro-impeachment lawmakers. He further disclosed that things will get clearer by Tuesday 25, 2014, when the Senate is expected to resume plenary.

Jonathan Vows To End Boko Haram’s Ability To Capture Nigerian Territories

            Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said that the Federal Government as well as the Nigerian Armed Forces and security agencies are working hard to ensure that the capture any territory in Nigeria by Boko Haram ends soon.

President Jonathan who was speaking in London at the opening of Nigeria’s Honorary International Investment Council (HIIC), assured the gathering that the Armed Forces and security agencies were making steady gains in recovering areas taken by the sect.

“We are improving on security. For about a week now there have been no reports of Boko Haram seizing more territory. Rather, we are steadily pushing them back. The impression being created by sections of the media that the situation is worsening is not true. I can assure you that it will never get worse,” President Jonathan told the gathering.

The President also seized the opportunity of the occasion to call for greater support from the National Assembly for the Federal Government’s efforts to curb terrorism, insurgency and insecurity in the country.

He told members of the council headed by Baroness Lynda Chalker that he had offered himself as a candidate in Nigeria’s next presidential elections because he was convinced that with four more years in office, he would be able to further consolidate the positive national reforms initiated by his administration and take them to a point of irreversibility for the good of all Nigerians.

“As you already know, I have indicated my willingness to carry on for another four years, if I am given the opportunity, so that we can carry forward some of the reforms we have been talking about,” the President said.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan cited the expansion of transportation infrastructure, improvement of local content in Nigeria’s oil industry, more inclusive economic growth, job creation and national security which are on the agenda of the meeting as some of the areas in which his administration still hoped to achieve further improvements.

“We cannot move the economy forward without good infrastructure. We have been working very hard in that area. We have improved our road network significantly. In the next three to four years, we should be able to resurface almost all federal roads in the country and begin new ones.

“We are  improving our airport terminals and aviation security. Reforms are also ongoing at our ports to drastically reduce the time required for import clearance formalities.

“In the rail sector, we may require private sector funds to quicken the pace of development. Our goal is to link all state capitals by rail. It may not be  an objective that can be achieved by a single administration, but we want to lay a solid foundation that others can build on.

“We are also promoting the increase of local content in our oil industry, because that is the only way in which our people will benefit more from the industry and begin to see themselves as true stakeholders who need to protect and help  in the development of our oil and gas resources,” President Jonathan said.

He thanked Baroness Chalker and other members of the council for their valuable advice to the Federal Government over the years.

“To be successful, leaders must take decisions based on adequate information and sound advice. Having had the personal benefit of interacting with you all as Vice President and President since 2007 has helped me a lot,” the President said.

The meeting later went into a closed door session to receive briefings, updates and presentations from relevant ministers and council members.

Jonathan’s performance below average – Obasanjo [MUST READ]

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday described the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan as below average. Obasanjo spoke during an encounter with book writers in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of activities marking the popular Ake Festival.

When asked of his view on Jonathan’s administration, he said, “His performance is below average. I will not accept responsibility for his performance. There is nobody that gets such a position without being helped.”

The former President also debunked the insinuations that he had selected Jonathan as the running mate to the late President Musa Yar’Adua because he knew the latter was sick.

“Yar’Adua told me he was well. He showed me his medical report and I even consulted experts,” he said.

He said he had only supported the idea of a South-Southerner succeeding Yar’Adua to extend the sense of belonging that the emergence of a Southern President in 1999 represented.

When the former President was also asked on why he preferred Jonathan to the former governor of Rivers State, Donald Duke, he said, “In my own life, I don’t put all my eggs in one basket. Duke was young enough to be in the reserve.

“He did not agree with me. Donald Duke is my friend but he needs a little of toning down. He needs to get his feet on the ground.”

The former President had, in a December 2, 2013 18-page letter to Jonathan titled: “Before it is too late” raised many issues concerning Jonathan’s administration.

The Presidency on Friday said a statement credited to Obasanjo that President Goodluck Jonathan’s performance is below average was “not true and in error.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said this in a telephone interview with SATURDAY PUNCH.

Okupe said if the statement indeed emanated from the former leader, it was the most uncharitable thing to say about the present administration which he said had achieved so much in various areas.

“If indeed former President Obasanjo said that, that statement was in error because no government since independence has done close to 50 per cent of what this administration has done in less than four years,” Okupe said.

He recalled that when Obasanjo was leaving office, the total power generation capacity in the country was about 2,600MW, claiming that the present administration had been able to raise the figure to about 4,000MW.

Okupe also said the Jonathan administration inherited 24 airports that were in states of disrepair across the country at inception.

He said all the airports had so far been refurbished by the present administration, therefore increasing the country’s reputation among comity of nations.

The presidential aide also said the present administration inherited 10 moribund National Integrated Power Projects and went ahead to restore and commission them.

He added that the Jonathan administration had succeeded in completely eradicating the rot and corruption met in the distribution of fertilisers in the agriculture sector.

He also said the present administration made progress in road construction by making 70 per cent of road network motorable.

Okupe also said many of the manufacturing industries that were moribund in 2011 have started work again.

“These are just a few among the achievements of the present administration. So if that statement was indeed made, it is most uncharitable and it is not true,” he added.

Tinubu Blast President Jonathan Over NASS Chaos

                Photo - Bola-Tinubu

Former Governor of Lagos state, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of handing a hand in the recent fracas in the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Thursday.Premium Times reports that Tinubu, a leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC has asked Nigerians to hold President Goodluck Jonathan responsible for the police’s action of preventing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal from entering the National Assembly.

Tinubu made this known in a statement on Friday by his media office said:

“No Commissioner of Police will ever embark on such an action without the clearance of the Inspector General of police and no IGP will order his men out here without approval by the Presidency. Nigerians know where the buck stops,” he said.

“The Jonathan Presidency must take full responsibility for the attack on the leadership of the National Assembly,” he said.

“This government cannot claim to be unaware of what the police would do. This gangster’s antic occurred almost at their doorstep. The Jonathan presidency can no longer play ignorance regarding the noxious things done for partisan ends.”

“Tambuwal did not have to accede to the presidential request to reconvene the House; but because he is a statesman and not a political hack, he assented so his chamber might consider this a matter of vital national importance.

“Despite the removal of the Policemen and Security team around him he still proceeded at great personal risk to answer the call of duty. He took the risk, believing his personal situation was a secondary thing when the fate of the nation comes into question.”

“Perhaps they saw this as a birthday present to Mr. President. But it is nothing but brigandage masquerading as governance. What this Presidency does not realize is how terribly it has exposed its pettiness and dictatorial penchant for elevating narrow political interests above the fate of the nation.

“There is little wonder the nation is losing ground to Boko Haram. This government has allowed and even welcomed the downward slide. If seriously committed to breaking the spine of this insurgency, the Jonathan government would have ensured that the House met without disturbance or partisan rancour.”

“Instead, Jonathan and his men used the gravest armed threat the nation has suffered in forty years, to lay a partisan political trap for one single man instead of allowing the House to deliberate for the good of 170 million people hoping for a way out of the growing carnage.”

Blasting President Jonathan of neglecting the challenges in the country and facing other matters, Tinubu said:

“The priorities of the Jonathan Presidency are as wrong as wrong can get. Their actions are devoid of national purpose. They reek of pungent ambition. A weakness of character now permeates national leadership.”

According to him, the most notable achievement of the Jonathan government had been to bring democracy to its knees, stressing “This is not the hallmark of a President but the work of a potentate.”

Yesterday, security operatives prevented the house Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal and lots of other lawmakers’ from gaining access into the House of Representatives complex in Abuja.

Loyalists to the lawmakers, however were not having any of that as they decided to scale the locked gate, gained access into the building and eventually brought the speaker inside the building so as to consider the president’s letter seeking an extension of emergency rule in the three northeast states of Yobe, Adamawa and Borno.

Meanwhile it has been reported that the Presidency has summoned Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba over the incident.

Over 120 Lawmakers Sign Pres. Jonathan’s Impeachment Notice!

                  House-of-Reps

Over 120 lawmakers have appended their signatures for the impeachment of President Goodluck Jonathan, immediately House reconvenes in December.
Mohammed Zakari, chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, while reacting on it said “the notice of impeachment was not on the order paper today but I’m not foreclosing that some other things took place.”
On his part, Leo Ogor, deputy House Leader who urged members to jettison such plans, argued that the notice of impeachment is inconsequential, as the President had no hand in what transpired at the National Assembly.

“The President is unaware so bringing it (impeachment) up is going to be defeated. The President has done no wrong, impeachment should not even be part of the issue,” he pleaded.

Similar agitation by aggrieved lawmakers to move for impeachment of Emeka Ihedioha, deputy Speaker during the brief closed door session, was however averted by the Speaker who called for calmness.

Accoridng to vanguard, The lawmakers who appended their signatures are of the APC extraction.
