BOKO HARAM: Cameroon And Chad Troops Storms Nigerian Territory

The Chadian and Cameroonian government has ordered its troops into Nigerian soil to recapture Baga from Boko Haram terrorists without the consent of the Nigerian government.

The Nigerian military today confirmed that they are in the dark and don’t know of an order by President Idriss Deby of Chad, deploying that country’s armed forces in pursuit of Boko Haram in Nigerian territory.

The defence spokesman, Chris Olukolade however revealed that it wasn’t against the law because Chad,Nigeria, Cameroun and Niger, all belong to a Multinational force set up to tackle the insurgent group.

Boko Haram insurgents had taken the town on January 3 after attacking the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF attached in the town.

Amnesty International claimed that the attack saw the death of over 2000 people but the military said that the casualty figures was less than 150.

Nigerien and Chadian troops part of the MNJTF were said to hae been pulled out days before the attack.

The Chadian president had on Thursday said that his army’s mission was to recapture Baga from the terrorists.

President Deby said: “We answered the call of (Cameroon’s) President Paul Biya. We cannot remain indifferent to what happens to our neighbours. Cameroon must not be left alone to face this threat that has so hurt innocent people in Cameroon and in Nigeria” .

The Nigerian military’s defence spokesman, Chris Olukolade revealed that government was unaware of the deployments but said that he would need to “verify”.

He told Premium Rimes: “I’ll need to verify what you are saying but it is not as if everything is out of order, there is Multinational Joint Task Force which allows us to interact with forces of neighbouring countries among which they are”.

“But even with that being the case, there cannot be solo operations in that area that will ignore the existing Nigeria’s arrangement for that area,” he added.

Security experts have said that the Nigerian Army’s reaction to the development was troublesome.

Peregrino Brimah, of the civil society group, Every Nigerian Do Something (ENDS). said: “The Nigerian government saying through the army spokesperson, General Olukolade that they are ‘lukewarm’ to Chad’s mission to Nigeria is very troubling to say the least. If Chad’s intentions and mission is good intended then why should the Nigerian government be kept out of the loop and be unenthusiastic? This questions the trust we as a people have in both governments. Would the Nigerian government not wish Chad assist them in rescuing occupied territories? Is there intelligence with the Nigerian administration that makes them suspicious of Chad; or are they uninterested in Nigeria’s liberation?” Peregrino Brimah, of the civil society group, Every Nigerian Do Something (ENDS).

Brimah said that Deby’s announcement is similar to Mexico crossing the border to rescue Texas.

“Chad setting out to assist Cameroon at their request is appropriate, however for the Chadian president, Idriss Deby to announce formally to his people and to the international press that his troops will be invading Nigeria to “re-capture” Baga, without express permission and willful authorization by the Goodluck Jonathan administration is absurd. It is like Mexico deciding it will invade the United States to rescue a “plagued Texas” without the explicit approval of the United States government.”

Boko Haram insurgents have been said to be crossing the border to Chad and Cameroun whenever Nigerian army applies some pressure to the terrorists, this was the reason the Multinational force was formed by Nigeria, Cameroun and Chad.

BOKO HARAM: See Why US Is Refusing To Stop Terrorist Group [VIDEO]

Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau pictured with some of his fighters

Many have wondered why the Western world reacted with outrage to the killings of 12 people in France but kept silent at the massacre of about 2,000 in Baga, Nigeria.

A military analyst for CNN, Major General James “Spider” Marks has said on the network that the US has refused to stopBoko Haram because ‘black West Africa’ is not a priority to the West.

Marks goes on to say that the West would have been more concerned if Boko Haram was operating in “White Africa”, which is the North, or in the Middle East.

227 Soldiers Protest Their Dismissal In Jos

About 227 members of the Nigerian Army serving with the 3rd Armoured Division in Jos, yesterday protested against their General Officer Commanding (GOC), asking for the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, Thisday reports.
The soldiers who claimed they were dismissed by the military authorities illegally, stormed the Plateau State Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Jos with placards saying they were dismissed without any reason and without the benefit of defending themselves.

Leading the protest was Sergeant Abiona Elisha, he said, “We were dismissed this week Tuesday from the service of the Nigerian Army after sending us to go and suffer fighting insurgency in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states.

“All of a sudden, we were recalled to the barracks and made to face trial. Even in the trial, we were not given the chance to defend ourselves. They just took decision and dismissed us. We were not even told what our offences were during the so-called trial.

“We are surprised that we can be treated like this in our own country. We were sent to fight insurgents without weapons. A lot of our colleagues were killed in the course of defending our fatherland. Even those who are in hospitals treating injuries they sustained from battle fields were also dismissed while still on hospital admission.

“The worst situation is that families of our colleagues killed in Adamawa and Yobe are languishing in hunger as Nigerian Army refused to pay their entitlements.
The soldiers called on the President and Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Kenneth Minimah, to intervene in their case and reinstate them.

When contacted, Deputy Director of the 3 Armoured Division Jos, Col. Texas Chukwu, said : “I am not aware of the development; I just returned from Yola on Tuesday. So I am not aware of anything. Thank you.”

BOKO HARAM: Nigerian Military Repels Attack On Damaturu

Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, has been restored to normal following an attack by Boko Haram fighters on the town last night.
Nigerian troops were said to have successfully repelled the insurgents by preventing them from entering the city centre.

This was disclosed by the Yobe state police commissioner, Marcus Danladi.

“The insurgents have been repelled, and Damaturu is now calm,” Mr. Danladi told Premium Times.

On January 9, 2015, Friday, at about 8pm, the insurgents were said to have descended on Damaturu, detonating explosives and shooting sporadically, while also engaging security forces in a lengthy gun battle.

Danladi however declined to provide any casualty figure.

According to him, the police was still going round to ascertain casualty and damage to properties during the gun duel between the insurgents and the Nigerian military.

Also speaking, a security official said soldiers engaged the insurgents on the fringes of the town even as they exchanged fire with another set of terrorists near Katarko village, some 20km away.

“As I have said earlier we are on top of the situation as far as this attack is concerned because our men have been fully mobilised to deal with such situation and presently we have already pushed them back towards Gujba road near one village called Katarko,” the official said.

A resident of Damaturu expressed joy that normalcy had been restored, saying: “We are happy that the shooting has gone down even though we still hear periodic sounds of gun shooting and detonation of explosives.”

It would be recalled that the terrorists laid siege to Damaturu about a month ago. In addition to this, the Boko Haram insurgents launched a heavy attack on the capital of Yobe on December 1, 2014, targeting the government house.

BOKO HARAM: Cameroon Military Kills 41 Insurgents

A cross section of Cameroonian soldiers

The Cameroonian army has killed 41 Boko Haram terrorists who entered into the country’s territory, the government has said.

The insurgents were said to have crossed the border between Nigeria and Cameroon and taken control of a military camp at Ashigashiya.

However, the terrorists were chased out by unprecedented air strikes carried out by Cameroonian troops.

According to a statement released by the country’s Minister of Information, Issa Tchiroma in in Yaounde on December 29:

“Boko Haram’s campaign to carve out an Islamist caliphate has spread from its stronghold in North-East Nigeria to neighbouring Cameroon, raising fears for an already unstable region also threatened by Islamist militants in the Sahel.”
“Units of the Boko Haram group attacked Makari, Amchide, Limani and Achigachia in a change of strategy which consists of distracting Cameroonian troops on different fronts, making them more vulnerable in the face of the mobility and unpredictability of their attacks,” the statement added.
“No fewer than 34 militants were killed after the army laid siege to a base used by the militants in Chogori while seven others and one soldier were killed near the town of Waza,” Tchiroma said.
The spokesperson for the Cameroonian army, Lt.-Col. Didier Badjeck also confirmed the reports saying that the militants were repelled by the air strikes.
“All the militants had now pulled back into Nigeria,” Badjeck said.

BOKO HARAM: Nigerian Army Accuses Sahara Reporters Of Having connections With The Terrorist Group

The Nigerian Army in a statement released on its website yesterday December 27th accused online media hub, Sahara Reporters of being the propaganda media for terrorism & Boko Haram in Nigeria. Find the military statement below...

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a publication on the website of Sahara Reporters with the caption “Nigerian Army Presents Unverified “Lt Col” To Refute Petition Against Military Hierarchy”. It is noteworthy but sad and unfortunate that Sahara Reporters has committed itself to support for terrorism and fighting Nigeria, its people, its military and particularly the Nigerian Army."

READ ALSO: North Korea Lambastes U.S Over Release Of 'The Interview', Calls Obama A Monkey

Before Sahara Reporters published their purported document described as petition from Lt Col Wende, a serving Commanding Officer, the Nigerian Army conducted a thorough investigation on the document involving other security and intelligence agencies. The process confirmed that the serving officer was not the author of the petition. Yesterday, the officer dissociated himself from the so-called petition in a press conference he personally attended. While reputable media organizations were on hand to engage the officer, Sahara Reporters being a faceless medium, preferred to remain faceless and was not represented. Sahara Reporters sadly, but predictably, and in fulfilment of its support for terrorism published in its website a fabrication in which it referred to the officer as “unverified”. How absurd!

READ ALSO: BUYING GUIDE:What To Consider Before You Buy Your Next Mobile Phone [MUST READ]

Sahara Reporters has strived hard to present itself as a propaganda medium for terrorism and Boko Haram in particular. It is with this in mind, that the Nigerian Army conducted a press conference in Maiduguri in which the officer who appeared for the press conference is Lt Col Wende, a serving officer of the Nigerian Army. Since the officer has clearly dissociated himself from the document, it makes sense that the so-called petition is the handiwork of Sahara Reporters. With time, terrorism in Nigeria and Sahara Reporters will be defeated by the collective will of the good people of Nigeria.

BOKO HARAM: 13 Year Old Suicide Bomber Confesses [MUST READ]

Zaharau Babangida

The girl who identified herself as Zaharau Babangida narrated how her own father had made her terrorist. According to Vanguard, she disclosed:
“It began one day when my father took my mum and I to a forest in Bauchi where we met people claiming to be working for God…
In the Bauchi forest I met some other girls who I guessed were my age mate and their leader told us to give our lives to God and enjoy the bounties of heaven.”

“I was not moved by the soul searching preaching of bounties in the heaven and it was at this point, their leader resorted to threat and intimidation to obtain my consent. We were shown a deep hole where the leader of the group threatened to bury us alive at a point if any of us refused to play along, and at another time he picked a big gun and threatened to shoot anyone who fails to obey his command.”

Speaking Wednesday, December 24, with journalists, the teenager continued:
“It was at this point my father stepped forward to persuade me to play along, and told me to prepare to die as martyr and clear the way for him to join me soon.”
Zaharau said that the men in the bush had continuously preached to her and other girls about suicide mission, Premium Times adds. She refused to accept the ideas introduced, but was threatened that she would be buried alive.
“I was in the bush when the people some who looks like Arabs and some huge black men told me that did I know what is suicide mission, that is one killing himself? I said no I don’t know, they explained it to me and said that if I did plus reciting Sura Albakara I will straight go to Paradise.

“I declined and told them I will not do it, they now told me that they would dig a hole and bury me alive because that is what they do to all women who refuse to adhere to their demands, and they said they meant what they said, I now complied.”

Thus the terrified had no other choice but agree to go on Kano mission, together with two other young girls.

The 13-year-old narrated what happened on the fateful day of the bloody Kano attack, which killed those 2 girls and 4 residents. According to Zaharau, they had a special guide who took them to the place.
“I and two other girls were conveyed to Kano and quartered at the outskirt of the city by a man I could hardly remember his name, and this same man conveyed all of us to the market square and deployed us at strategic positions at Kwari market on the day we struck.”
She said she had refused to commit the crime and follow the other girls. But the two soon they blew themselves up and left Zaharau injured.

“I was taken aback when my partners were shattered to pieces barely a second after they detonated. I then rushed out of the scene to pick a commercial rickshaw to a hospital in Dawanau area of the city for medical treatment, and doctors were already attending to me when the driver of the Keke NAPEP resurfaced and showed me a metal object and requested to know whether it was mine of which I answered in affirmative.

“I told him the object he dangled before me is a bomb and its mine, and in no time armed soldiers picked me from my sick bed to their headquarters.”

Meanwhile Kano State Commissioner of Police, Aderele Shinaba, revealed that one of the girls’ guides had been arrested. He however didn’t say what had happened to Zaharau’s father.

Nigeria Military Set To Court-Martial 100 Soldiers

The Nigerian military will soon court-martial over 100 army personnel, a senior military official has said.
The senior military official told Channels Television on Tuesday that the affected officers would be tried for various offences in relation to the counter-terrorism operation in the north-east.
According to the military source, the soldiers have been transported from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to Abuja to face the charges which have not been made known.
This comes a week after 54 soldiers were sentenced to death by firing squad for refusing to fight the Boko Haram terrorist group.

When contacted, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said there was nothing to worry about court-martial because it’s a regular occurence in the military, as a tool for discipline.

On Wednesday, December 17, 2014, the Nigerian Army’s 7 division General Court Martial convicted 54 soldiers for conspiracy to commit mutiny and sentenced them to death by firing squad.

The facts of the case indicated that the soldiers, from the 111 Special Forces, were charged for disobeying a direct order from their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Opurum, to take part in an operation to recapture Delwa, Bulabulin and Damboa in Borno State from Boko Haram terrorists on August 4.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has asked a group of five United Nations human rights independent experts to individually and jointly request that the mass death sentences imposed on 54 Nigerian soldiers found guilty of mutiny should not be carried out.
The Executive Director of SERAP, Adetokunbo Mumuni, in a petition to the rights group, said it was not right or fair to try everyone in mass proceedings, and that such unfair trial should not send someone to the gallows.
He asked the group to make the request to the Nigerian government and the military.

Mr Mumuni emphasised that imposition of mass death sentences was in breach of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Nigeria was a party.
“This Covenant limits the circumstances in which a state can impose the death sentence,” he said.

BOKO HARAM: Ex-Borno Governor Makes Serious Revelations

Ali Modu Sheriff

It would be recalled that Senator Sheriff was in the center of the scandal that was started this year by Australian negotiator Stephen Davis, who named the politician as one of Boko Haram sponsors.Earlier this week, however, the news broke out that Sheriff had been fully cleared, with the Nigerian Secret Service saying that Davis and his associates were fraudsters aimed at discrediting Nigeria’s authorities.

READ ALSO: BOKO HARAM: Military Kills Over 75 Insurgents In Borno [UPDATED]
According to Leadership, Sheriff spoke Sunday, December 21, with BBC Hausa in Abuja narrating all he new about the dreaded sect.

The former governor of the state, badly affected by insurgency, denied reports saying that Boko Haram started during his tenure (2003-2011). According to him, the sect actually started in Yobe State in 1992 and he tried to solve the problem by different means.
“This is not true. The Boko Haram issue did not start during my tenure. If you don’t know, let me educate you today. Boko Haram started in 1992 at Kalama in Yobe State, and at that time, I was not a governor. So, if anybody tells you it started during my tenure, he may be part of my traducers. But the truth is that it didn’t start during my tenure.”
The senator stressed that Chad could possibly help Nigeria with solving the insurgency problem, however he kept mute on how it could be achieved.

“Nothing preoccupies my mind in Nigeria presently like the return of peace in Borno. When Borno State was peaceful, there was no place I cherished to stay in the world like Maiduguri. I, my friends, my confidants, my parents and all the schools I attended are in Maiduguri.
“Therefore, I am more concerned than anybody in this country, because what Borno State did for me has not been done to any other indigene. You know, in Borno State, a governor has never been re-elected apart from me; in Borno State, no senator has ever been elected thrice apart from me. So, Borno people have done everything for me, and there is no one in this world that I know other than Chad, which I think could help Borno.”
Reacting to the “Boko Haram sponsor” saga, Sheriff expressed confidence that it had been an orchestrated plot by Borno tops to defame his character.
“They defamed my character, and when they started it, I once told journalists that it was plotted in Maiduguri. We know the plotters, their motives, and that by the grace of God, the truth will prevail; and now, the arrested impostors have said it all to the world.”
It would be recalled that the Federal Government and Boko Haram were reported to have concluded a ceasefire agreement October 17 in Chad. The deal later turned out to be fake as it was followed by numerous attacks and kidnaps by the sect.

READ ALSO: BOKO HARAM: I Am Untouchable- Sanusi Tells Shekau

President Goodluck Jonathan visited Chad twice earlier this year in order to find a lasting solution. However, GEJ came under attacks after Sheriff, at that time alleged Boko Haram sponsor, had been spotted at the high-level meeting with him and Chadian president Idriss Derby.

Meanwhile Isa Gusau, the spokesman of Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, responded to Sheriff’s claims that the state authorities wanted to tarnish his image.
“Governor Kashim Shettima has nothing to gain from the allegation against Ali Sheriff. In fact, to him, it is even shameful that a Borno State indigene, whom the governor has interacted or is connected with, is linked to what is happening. So, Governor Shettima’s connection with this saga is unnecessary.”
Boko Haram have recently intensified their attacks in the North-East of the country. The sect members reportedly killed 32 people and abducted 185 women and children in Gumsuri on December 14. The authorities are yet to officially confirm the abduction.

BOKO HARAM: Military Kills Over 75 Insurgents In Borno [UPDATED]

Military vs BH9

Military sources said yesterday that the Nigerian Army has killed more than seventy five Boko Haram terrorists. The sources said that troops of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army at Dogon wire along Maiduguri Damboa road in Borno killed the insurgents Wednesday night.
A military officer who did not want his name in print first told a Vanguardngr correspondent in Maiduguri that they were giving security cover to the staff of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to repair destroyed transmission cables at Damboa when they sighted groups of the insurgents coming towards them.

He said “we were on the electric tower on surveillance of any perceived threat, while the staff of the TCN were repairing the destroyed cables, when we sighted the insurgents coming in groups and we immediately opened fire on them”.
“We kept on firing but they continue moving towards our position, then our commander ordered the armored tanker to start firing. They still continued coming unabated until the commander ordered the artillery to shell them, that was when we cleared them”, the source said.
As a result of the battle a large number of terrorists was said to have been killed. Their weapons and vehicles were seized by the soldiers. The recovered weapons include the explosives, rocket propelled grenades and rifles. Two brave soldiers lost their lives in the fight.

The extremists suffered a setback when they attacked soldiers guarding a power station in Borno state, according to an engineer who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. He said soldiers were warned in advance that the extremists were advancing and engaged the militants in fierce fighting that killed at least 70.

Extremists have killed thousands of people in a 5-year uprising that has driven some 1.6 million from their homes.

It would be recalled that over 120 worshippers lost their lives on November 28, 2014, as a result of terrorist attack on the Central Mosque in Kano.

Less than 2 weeks before the mentioned bloody attack Muhammad Sanusi II called on Nigerians to defend themselves against the Boko Haram extremists.

“People must not wait for soldiers to protect them. There are even instances where soldiers on ground ran away in the face of attack,” he said during prayers for peace in Nigeria on November 15, 2014 .
