Nigerian troops were said to have successfully repelled the insurgents by preventing them from entering the city centre.
This was disclosed by the Yobe state police commissioner, Marcus Danladi.
“The insurgents have been repelled, and Damaturu is now calm,” Mr. Danladi told Premium Times.
On January 9, 2015, Friday, at about 8pm, the insurgents were said to have descended on Damaturu, detonating explosives and shooting sporadically, while also engaging security forces in a lengthy gun battle.
Danladi however declined to provide any casualty figure.

According to him, the police was still going round to ascertain casualty and damage to properties during the gun duel between the insurgents and the Nigerian military.
Also speaking, a security official said soldiers engaged the insurgents on the fringes of the town even as they exchanged fire with another set of terrorists near Katarko village, some 20km away.
“As I have said earlier we are on top of the situation as far as this attack is concerned because our men have been fully mobilised to deal with such situation and presently we have already pushed them back towards Gujba road near one village called Katarko,” the official said.

A resident of Damaturu expressed joy that normalcy had been restored, saying: “We are happy that the shooting has gone down even though we still hear periodic sounds of gun shooting and detonation of explosives.”
It would be recalled that the terrorists laid siege to Damaturu about a month ago. In addition to this, the Boko Haram insurgents launched a heavy attack on the capital of Yobe on December 1, 2014, targeting the government house.
