Being nervous in the transfer market has long been a criticism aimed at Arsene Wenger but he'll believe the advantages of such outweigh any negatives. Wenger is cautious when buying players but also cautious when selling them, the protracted transfer of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona is one example but also the sale of Carlos Vela to Real Sociedad.
Arsenal can buy him back for €4m and as the player himself told newspaper Diario Vasco the club "wouldn't be very intelligent," if they gave up the option of doing that this summer. He explained that he expects that's what will happen after his good season with Real Sociedad.
There were also reports in England earlier this month, one from talkSPORT, claiming that Arsenal had taken the first steps to activating their clause.
Marca today have a feature on the most wanted players in La Liga this summer and Vela makes it on to the list. The Mexican scored 16 goals during the last league season, only 2 of those penalties, and has interested some of Spain's bigger clubs, but he has a buyout clause of €30m according to Marca.
That of course means it could cost another club €26m more than it would cost Arsenal to get the player. Making it something of a 'no-brainer' to either complete the buyback or use the leverage to help Arsenal get someone else from Real Sociedad... such as Antoine Griezmann.
Reports in England and Spain have said Arsenal plan to bring Vela back to London but, if Wenger isn't so sure about that, he can go for Griezmann. The Frenchman has a buyout clause of €30m, which Arsenal could bring down significantly by giving up their Vela option.
Even Wenger wouldn't have thought his cautious insistence on clauses would throw up that opportunity.
